It takes a lot to rattle a Black Widow, but Dottie Underwood might just meet her match when she comes face-to-face with Whitney Frost in Tuesday’s double header of Marvel’s Agent Carter.
“Peggy has to use Dottie and control Dottie to her advantage to help come get Whitney Frost, which is whole new dynamic in her relationship with Dottie, who becomes this floating assassin that’s kind of a freelancer and always a threat to Peggy,” star Hayley Atwell tells EW. “She’s having to be used to get to the main nemesis to get to Whitney Frost.” So does that mean that maybe Dottie can be trusted after all?
“No, I think she knows that,” says Atwell. “She knows that Dottie is a psychopath. The thing with Dottie that’s very clear is she has no empathy and that’s incredibly dangerous. She’s sick, she’s evil. Dottie is also a genius manipulator and a chameleon, so she can also portray anything she needs to get what she wants for her own personal gain at whatever cost that is and to the destruction of other people.”
Desperate times, however, call for desperate measures. And judging by the setbacks Peggy and her team have experienced so far when it comes to the cunning movie star, they’re going to need all the help they can get. “Peggy can’t deny she can be extremely valuable,” says Atwell. “It’s like having to tame a python, or a, well, a Black Widow! She’s having to tame a poisonous spider that wants to destroy everything. It’s like she’s going, ‘There’s a Black Widow in the middle of that web, but my God, look at how beautiful the web she is weaving. How can I use that to springboard for my own mission? How do I put a leash on that Black Widow and use this web to my advantage?’ It’s a really interesting dynamic in that sense.
“They feign a friendship, but they both know on the surface that it’s a game of psychological warfare between them.”
Marvel’s Agent Carter airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
